Compensation for services provided to recover and reclaim residual materials : 47 M $ paid as of today to municipal organizations

January 21st, 2008 – As of today, 47 million dollars were paid as compensation to over 500 municipal organizations for services provided to recover and reclaim residual materials for the years 2005 and 2006. This money will enable municipal organizations to continue improving their curbside recycling services including collection and sorting equipments, while informing their citizens of the importance of recycling.

The Regulation respecting compensation for municipal services provided to recover and reclaim residual materials, in effect since March 1st, 2005, prescribes designated companies and organizations, responsible of putting containers, packaging and printed materials on the market, to compensate for up to 50 % of the cost of municipal curbside recycling services. This system imposes upon registered financing organizations such as Éco Entreprises Québec and Recyclemédias to collect the funds from these companies and remit them, on an annual basis, to municipalities that offer services for the designated materials.

The total amount of compensation paid by Éco Entreprises Québec, for the period starting March1st, 2005 up to December 31st, 2006, is of 54 million dollars. According to the Regulation, Recyclemédias has, [...]
